Patricia’s Success Story
Patricia Denson stands proud today as a recognized leader in the social work sector and is excited to begin her Master’s in Social Work at Barry University this summer. For her, knowledge is imperative to reaching her goals to give back to others in need of being empowered and supported. She knows the narrative all too well.
In 2010, Patricia, found herself living on the streets, attracted to the lack of rules and boundaries living day to day brought. By chance, a stranger recommended Chapman Partnership as a way to find a different path and a better quality of life. At the moment, Patricia said, she wasn’t ready to change her lifestyle. But, eventually, the wear and tear of being unhoused led her to 1550 N. Miami Avenue, what was then known as the HAC, Homeless Assistance Center.
“Chapman Partnership brought me structure, much-needed structure,” shared Patricia. “I learned how to make my bed for the first time in my life.”
These little life skills, the details of learning to eat properly, regular hygiene, and self-care led her to start feeling better and stronger about herself. And in the hallways of Chapman Partnership’s Miami Center, she found her faith.
With support from staff, learning to stand up for herself, and hope to find a job, Patricia’s homelessness ended with her move-out kit of kitchen supplies and furniture.
Twelve years later, Patricia is getting ready to start her Master’s degree in Social Work and is President of the Student Social Work Association. She is raising her 21-year-old daughter to find her own path and look for a way to shine with her natural talents.
