Carlos A. Migoya and Jackson Health System Named as Recipient of the 2014 Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Humanitarian Award

MIAMI,– Sept. 22, 2014 – Chapman Partnership announced Carlos A. Migoya and Jackson Health System as its 2014 recipient of the Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Humanitarian Award for continuously leading the way in Carlos_A_Migoya supporting and assisting the homeless in Miami-Dade County. The award will be presented to Mr. Migoya, President & CEO of Jackson Health System at Chapman Partnership’s 13th Annual Gala on November 1, 2014, at the JW Marriott Marquis in downtown Miami.

“We chose to honor Carlos Migoya and Jackson Health System because of Carlos’ personal commitment, his leadership and the effort of all healthcare professionals at Jackson Health System to ensure that the homeless of our community receive world-class healthcare, dignity and respect,” said Trish Bell, chairman of Chapman Partnership’s board of trustees. “Jackson Health System’s continued support, management and staffing of our two health clinics enables us to meet the critical healthcare needs of the homeless residents at our two centers serving Miami-Dade County.”

The Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Humanitarian Award is given at the annual gala to an individual or organization in Miami-Dade County who has been instrumental in leading the challenge of helping homeless men, women and children in our community.

“Being recognized by an organization for which I care so deeply is truly an honor,” Carlos Migoya, President & CEO, Jackson Health System, said. “My involvement with Chapman Partnership and with Jackson is part of my ongoing work to honor the legacy of Alvah Chapman, who defined service and community for everyone who loves South Florida.”

A key component of Chapman Partnership’s services is providing resources to support the physical and mental health of residents. Through partnerships with key providers, residents have access to state-of-the-art on-site health resources.

Jackson Health System has been a valuable partner of Chapman Partnership since 1995 when the downtown center first opened and has since seen more than 167,000 patient visits. The clinics become their primary care provider during their stay, and offer a highly cost-effective approach to serving the homeless as compared to emergency room visits which homeless individuals utilize multiple times a year, thereby saving the community $1,000,000 per year in ER services.

The 13th Annual Chapman Partnership “Illuminations” Gala will be held on Saturday, November 1 at the JW MARRIOTT MARQUIS. Proceeds from this gala help fund Chapman Partnership’s life changing programs and services to the homeless men, women and families that reside at its two centers. The event co-chairs are Susan Kahn & Lani Kahn Drody and Norma Quintero & Alessandra Quintero.

Chapman Partnership Announces 100,000th Homeless Admission

Achieves Major Milestone in Impacting and Empowering the Homeless

MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 16, 2014) – Chapman Partnership, Miami-Dade County’s primary emergency intake facility for the homeless, today announced that this month it admitted its 100,000th resident since opening 19 years ago. Chapman Partnership operates two Homeless Assistance Centers with 800 beds located in Miami and Homestead.

Meeting the needs of the homeless population remains a challenge, according to Chapman Partnership CEO H. Daniel Vincent, but the organization has had stand-out success due largely to its network of partner organizations and 20,000+ volunteers. The majority of Chapman Partnership residents, 64%, are able to move to permanent or transitional housing – a rate more than four times the national average of 15%.

Chapman Partnership empowers the homeless by providing a comprehensive support program that also includes emergency housing, health, dental and psychiatric care, day care, job training, job placement and assistance with securing stable housing.

“The challenges continue to evolve as we serve increasing numbers of families with children and ‘working homeless’ but under ongoing financial constraints,” said Vincent. “Admitting our 100,000th resident is a significant milestone for our organization, but a great deal of work remains.”

Chapman Partnership relies on its partners and volunteers to fulfill its mission, including The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Jackson Health System and Citrus Health among many others. Private sector partners help fund additional training and employment programs that have helped thousands obtain jobs and start new careers towards self-sufficiency. Other organizations, including churches, synagogues, civic groups and support organizations as well as city-, county-, and state-level departments, round out the continuum of homeless care in Miami.

MIAMI, FL – Chapman Partnership, Miami-Dade County’s primary intake facility for the homeless, recently received a $30,000 grant from Health Foundation of South Florida to help support medical costs affiliated with the provision of oral health care for homeless men, women and children offered through Chapman Partnership’s onsite Mobile Dental Unit.

The Mobil Dental Unit, a 40’ long dental office on wheels created in 2005 through support from the North Dade Medical Foundation, provides essential oral health care to approximately 1,400 Miami-Dade County homeless individuals annually. The community cost savings of the serious oral health procedures provided that divert homeless clients from using an emergency room setting is approximately $300,000 annually.

Chapman Partnership estimates that one-half of its 5,000 annual clients are negatively impacted by gum disease. Malnutrition, poor oral hygiene, tobacco use and trauma wreak havoc on the oral and general health of homeless people. Too often grossly decayed and missing teeth disfigure the faces of the 800 homeless persons who daily access temporary housing and supportive services at Chapman Partnership’s two Homeless Assistance Centers located in Midtown Miami and Homestead. Exacerbating these problems is financial barriers to treatment, an insufficient supply of dental providers willing to treat them, and a lack of transportation.

“The rampant tooth decay that we’ve found in our underprivileged population is one of the leading causes of poor overall health. The inclusion of oral health care into our current medical triage has enabled us to reduce the wait time to access appointments for the underserved and uninsured, and reduce the distance they have to travel to access culturally appropriate care,” said H. Daniel Vincent, President & CEO of Chapman Partnership.

The collaboration between Chapman Partnership, Health Foundation of South Florida, and other private and public sector sources, provides the perfect vehicle for increasing access to critically needed dental care for our community’s homeless population.

Chapman Partnership was founded in 1993 and operates as the primary private sector partner to the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust. The service mission of Chapman Partnership is to provide comprehensive services to empower our homeless residents to become self-sufficient. Chapman Partnership is commissioned by the Homeless Trust to raise private sector funding necessary to implement the Homeless Plan, and to operate two Homeless Assistance Centers that provide an average of 47-to-60 days of stabilization and comprehensive needs assessment to 5,000 clients annually. This partnership has been continually recognized nationally as a best practice model for its comprehensive approach to helping the homeless, including recognition by former U.S. Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development Mel Martinez and Andrew Cuomo, and two former Florida Governors.

MIAMI, FL – Tuesday, October 15th, 2013 – Chapman Partnership was awarded its third consecutive Charity Navigator 4-star rating, the highest ranking bestowed to a nonprofit organization for exceeding industry standards and outperforming other charities in America.

As the recipient of a four-star rating out of four, Chapman Partnership is acknowledged for sound fiscal management, transparency and accountability. Only 11 percent of charities evaluated by the rating service receiveat least two consecutive 4-star designations.

“We are proud to receive this exceptional designation from Charity Navigator for the third year in a row, demonstrating again to the public that Chapman Partnership is worthy of their trust,” said H. Daniel Vincent, president and CEO of Chapman Partnership.

“Our commitment is to assist homeless individuals and families in our community and get them back on their feet—that’s where we invest our dollars,” Vincent said.

Chapman Partnership spends 84 percent of its income on programs for the homeless men, women and children. Administrative and fundraising expenses account for only 16 percent of its income.

MIAMI, FL – Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 – Chapman Partnership announced the Miami HEAT as its 2013 recipient of the Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Humanitarian Award for continuously leading the way in supporting and assisting the homeless in Miami-Dade County. The award will be presented to the HEAT at Chapman’s 12th Annual Gala on Oct. 18, 2013, at the JW Marriott Marquis in downtown Miami.

“We chose to honor the Miami HEAT because of the commitment of both the organization and its individual members in giving back to our community repeatedly and generously,” said Trish Bell, chairman of Chapman Partnership’s board of directors. “Their continued support of our work in eradicating homelessness in Miami-Dade County is commendable.”

The Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Humanitarian Award is given to an individual or organization in Miami-Dade County who has been instrumental in leading the challenge of helping homeless men, women and children in our community.

In March 2013, the HEAT unveiled the renovation of its 11th HEAT Learn & Play Center at Chapman Partnership North in Miami. The renovations included new paint, wall graphics, Apple iPad minis and furniture. Players Shane Battier, who donated shirts and shoes, and James Jones attended the ribbon cutting. The HEAT regularly donates food to the Chapman centers, located in Miami and Homestead, after home games through their ReHEAT program.

At the Gala, there will be clothing donations of practice gear and auction items, such as game tickets to support a variety of Chapman’s fundraising efforts.

Many of the Miami HEAT players are involved and host events supporting Chapman Partnership. Dwyane Wade’s organization, Wades World Foundation, donated the construction of a basketball court, and Chris and Adrienne Bosh will be serving meals and spending time with families for the third year this Thanksgiving. Adrienne Bosh has also hosted Easter and Mother’s Day events. Ray Allen’s Ray of Hope donated Christmas gifts for 140 kids last year.

Udonis Haslem is a community advocate for Chapman Partnership and frequently visits with the kids at the Chapman centers. James Jones hosted a week long summer camp for 48 kids from Chapman North and South, and Coach Erik Spoelstra has new players serve meals every year.

“The dedication of the Miami HEAT players, their families and the entire HEAT organization to the homeless in our community is overwhelming,” said H. Daniel Vincent, president & CEO of Chapman Partnership. “We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support of our centers and the homeless families we assist.”
